Meet the Group of Seven
by David Wistow and Kelly McKinley
Kids Can Press, 1999

This book is a visual treat and provides an excellent introduction to the work of this famous group of Canadian artists. Through many full-colour art reproductions, photos and easy-to-read, informative text we enter the world of the Group - Franklin Carmichael, Lawren Harris, A.Y. Jackson, Frank Johnston, Arthur Lismer, J.E.H. MacDonald and Frederick H. Varley. The Group was formed in 1920 and existed until 1933, with some artists leaving and others joining the group during this time.

What united the original Group of Seven was their love for Canada's wilderness landscape and their belief that this reflected the true spirit and character of the country. This fascinating book presents in a simple way the themes and styles of Group of Seven painting and what made them unique. An inspiration to the Group was the work of artist Tom Thomson, and the book devotes a special section to the mystery surrounding Thomson's death, as well as looking at how the Group did their work and why their art is so valued today.

Meet the Group of Seven is full of interesting facts and wonderful art - and it will give readers of all ages a true appreciation of the beauty of Canada's varied landscape and of the men who captured it on canvas.
