Mina's Spring of Colors
by Rachna Gilmore
Fitzhenry and Whiteside, 2000

Governor General's Award-winner Rachna Gilmore has created a funny and touching story about a family where East Indian and Canadian cultures mix and about Mina, who sometimes finds herself torn between them. It is almost time for the spring festival of Holi, a celebration of colors. Mina's family and friends are eagerly looking forward to her family's annual Holi party, but something happens which threatens to spoil Mina's usual enjoyment of the big event. She dearly loves her grandfather, but ever since he immigrated from India to live with them, Mina has often found herself feeling critical of his more traditional ways and even slightly embarrassed - she does not want him to make her look "geeky" in front of her friends. However, when Mina overhears a classmate making fun of her grandfather, she is devastated and can only think of revenge. It is her grandfather's own wisdom and understanding which finally teaches Mina an important lesson and restores the joy of the celebration of colors in her heart.

An easy-to-read novel for ages 9-12.
